TGS 2020 Workshop Series

Our Beginners Classes are typically scheduled on the 4th Saturday of January through June. Topics and dates are in the works for 2020. All TGS meetings/classes are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.

Session I | Climbing Your Family Tree, A Beginner’s Guide – Steve King Includes use of pedigree charts and family group sheets, collecting and documentation, difference in primary resources and secondary resources, collateral lines, resources, suggestions of organization tools and supplies. January 2020 |
Session II | “Where/How Do I Find Important Legal Records & Certificates?” – Annette Corbell Discover which records/certificates are available; local, state, and national. Where do I start? How can I decipher legal terms? Which legal documents do I need to include in my family history? February 2020 |
Session III | Gleaning Family History from the US Census Records – Carol Ellis-Jones Explanation of each census and the information available on each; Where/how censuses can be found and keeping track of the information. Mortality schedules, the 1890 schedule of CW Union veterans, slave schedules, state, territorial and agricultural censuses, and Indian records will be touched on briefly. March 2020 |
Session IV | Cemetery Research – Sue Tolbert “What can I learn from granddaddy’s grave? What is that symbol on the stone and why is it there? How can I use this information? What do I do if the grave is unmarked? ???” We have some answers! Don’t miss this workshop. April 2020 |
Session V | Military Records; “Where to Find, What is There? And How to Use” – Steve King Review of American Wars, records unique to each, WW I Draft Cards, types of pensions, which censuses can help. May 2020 |
Session VI | Organization of Research Materials and Tools – Dorothy Becknell “Help! Paper, Pictures, Files, Certificates Everywhere! How do I get a handle on this stuff? What are some tools I can use to keep it organized and user friendly?” June 2020 |
