Researching Civil War Ancestors

Federal and State Sources

Introduction:

The following is a list of resources for use in researching Civil War ancestors. The list was originally included as part of Tulsa Genealogical Society's workshop 'Researching Civil War Ancestors' presented on March 22, 2004 by Kathy Huber and Hugh Keen. The list has here been revised and updated to include the correct citation information for each source as applicable. This should make it much easier to provide information for requesting a specific source from the Tulsa City-County Library Genealogy Center or through Interlibrary Loan.

At the end of many citations is an abbreviation, noted in parentheses, to indicate local availability of the source. The key to the abbreviations is as follows:

(Gen. Ctr.): Available at the Tulsa City-County Library Genealogy Center.

(TGS Lib.): Available at the Tulsa Genealogical Society Library.

            (ILL): Request through Interlibrary Loan.

(LDS): Available through loan from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Family History Center. See website: www.familysearch.org for library catalog.

The 'Federal and State Sources' list is far from being a complete listing of Civil War sources for the researcher. The focus for this project has been the listing of soldiers and veterans with a statewide or broader scope or definition.
